Looking past the current economic crisis lies another crisis: the depreciation of companies in our communities and people’s sense of belonging to something greater than themselves. Caring is the foundation of “community”. Caring about our homes, family, friends, neighbors, neighborhoods, careers, and our place in the world.
Leaders need to re-engage their communities and people they serve. The idea of individualism is great. It encourages development, provides incentives, and promotes leadership. But not on its own. As social animals we cannot effectively function without a social system larger than ourselves in place. It is the glue that holds us together for the greater good, this is what we mean by “community”.
